BASIC DESKTOP MAPPING

Description. The technology of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has been extensively applied by many organizations during the past decade to support spatial planning and decision-making at various levels and for different purposes. This can be utilized as spatial decision-support tool in general especially in developing a land-use plan and for the management and monitoring of natural resources in particular.

Objectives. This training hopes to introduce the concept of desktop mapping through GIS using the ARCVIEW software. Specifically this training will:
   * introduce the fundamental geo-information system concepts as
represented by the basic methods and techniques of the ARCVIEW
      software package;
   * assist the participants in creating, editing, displaying, querying and
analyzing geographic and tabular data and guide participants in
creating presentation maps and charts using ARCVIEW software.

Methodology.
This three-day seminar will make use of substantial input sessions, presentations, discussion and hands-on exercises.

Who should attend. This course assumes that participants has no previous knowledge of desktop mapping or GIS technology, however, participants should know how to work with windowing software.

Outline
   * Overview on GIS Concepts and Desktop Mapping
   * Overview of ARCVIEW GIS: Capabilities and applications
   * ARCVIEW GIS projects and documents: How projects organize,
manage and store ARCVIEW GIS documents (views, tables, charts
      and layouts)

   * ARCVIEW GIS on-line help system: Using on-line help, hypertext
      jumps and context-sensitive help

   * ARCVIEW GIS views and themes: Creating views and themes to display
geographic data, manipulating the table of contents to
create the symbology and classification scheme for each theme.

   * Creating and editing themes: Using ARCVIEW GIS shapefiles to
create and edit shape themes, adding and editing features,
creating themes from a file of x,y coordinate locations

   * Spatial query and analysis: Selecting features based on
relationships between multiple themes, merging theme features
      and attributes for analysis

   * Spatial query and analysis: Selecting features based on
relationships between multiple themes, merging theme features
      and attributes for analysis

   *
ARCVIEW GIS Tables: Creating an ARCVIEW GIS table from a
variety of tabular data sources, selecting from a table, joining
multiple tables, modifying the structure of a table, and editing
      values in a table.

   * ARCVIEW GIS Charts: Creating a chart for presenting tabular data,       techniques for changing the look of a chart
   * ARCVIEW GIS Layouts: Creating a final map for presentation and       printing; combining views, tables, charts, and images, as well as
north arrows, logos and scale bars, to create a final map
